BACKWASH -

drunken jesus
fights the cross currents
short back and side wash
swimming for his life
catches a wave
bodysurfs it to the shore
staggers up the beach
collapses face down
in the warm sand

he moans
clutching his head
it was the morning after
the last supper

waves of nausea wash over him
like the hissing lines of white scum
that rush up the shore line
to kiss the sacred feet
foam froth bubbles
clean out the famous wound
with a headful of pounding surf
he rolls onto his side
and discharges the entire meal
drops his head into the sand
face down in his own regurgitation
it was the morning after
the last supper
and there was something going on with the wine

an attack from below the belt
through determined teeth
spurting like oil from a wreck
loaves and fishes
and the water
he had turned to wine
they said he should walk back
to the shore
across the water
watched by
the drunken twelve
It was the disciples
who took him to sea
on a boat in Galilee
they drink like fish
those merry men
they threw him in
and watched him sink
in the water
which he had turned to wine
