lyrics

Pawpaws explode
in scenes of smashed
orange and blue buckshot skies.
A million feet stamp down
on puppy-dog-tails in surf city.
Shattering glass like Jericho.
Fragments tear holes through meat and muscle,
chewed up and spat like sperm
on walls pulped and sprayed with fibre
and brickdust.
Her cigarette blows across her face alight.
She says,
“Christ it’s good to stay and fight.”
Fathers Pride with almond hair
pasted like paper over crushed cafe chairs;
Paint running yellow and
avocado screams punctuate her movie.
Strips of tarmac and burst rubber
slice through floral skirts
and Snake Park shirts.
Pawpaws explode tiny black seeds
through beach-towels, umbrellas,
and deckchair horizons are blown to hell.
Her movie mouths surrender
stewed fruit and seeds and
moss coloured molars bite back.
Clams hold their tongues
because muscles don’t grow here no more
Ice cream baby don’t push that pram
through supermarket chains
Let’s go shopping
when the bombs stop dropping from bags in drains.
