about

Dust farmers advance
with guns and pipes
their hats are pulled low
Voices grind and grate
like tractors moving through a swamp land
It’s dry out there in diesel air
they cough some body curses
Shrieking birds collide like stones
and shatter in the thorn trees

Leopard crawl through borders
they sharpen claws
on a frontier somewhere
Reproducing nightmares
They don’t care
You can sell fear any where

Flies disguise dead eyes
suck moisture from exposed intestines
Bleeding veins like vines
a mess of twisted
human grass stains
Files of maize smoke
Bodies blaze
stubbed out in earthly ash tray
Broken walls from torn thatched huts.
Spilt gourds drip beer and goats milk.

Leopard crawl through borders
they sharpen claws
on a frontier somewhere
Reproducing nightmares
They don’t care
You can sell fear anywhere

Dust devils recover tracks
At base the farmers relax
with families the fat of the land
in blood rivers they wash their hands
Always obsessed with carnal sin
They drink by Christ and soak it up like string
A spear hangs above the bar
Where ears are tuned to country guitar
Or threaded onto wire the color of rust
Pipes and guns the advanced farmers trust
I’m leaving on a jet plane don’t know when I’ll be back again
